TTL’s OFC Plant has facilities to manufacture mainly loose tube-type cables designed to give optimum fiber performance for many applications. This type of cable consists of a number of loose tubes stranded around a central strength member with an overall protective jacket. Each tube carries a number of optical fibers that lie loose in the tube. The tubes are filled with thixotropic jelly that cushions the fibers and resists water from entering the fiber. The loose tube also isolates the fiber from the exterior mechanical forces placed in the cable. The fibers in the tube are slightly longer than the cable itself to elongate under tensile loads without applying stress to the fiber. Both loose tubes, as well as fibers, are individually color-coded for easy identification.
Tamilnadu Telecommunications Limited (TTL) was set up in 1988 as a three-way joint venture of Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), a Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Communications, which renders Consultancy Services and undertakes Turnkey Projects in all Fields of Telecommunications in India and abroad, Tamilnadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO), a Govt. of Tamilnadu Enterprise, which is responsible for the development of industry in the State of Tamilnadu, India and Fujikura Limited of Japan, A leading manufacturer of Optical Fiber Products in the world.

Note
Though Indian fiber optic cable history is incomplete without Optel and HCL, they are not active now. These two are the first to start fiber optic cable production in India. HCL used to supply Ribbon type cables while Optel was the first to start loose tube cable designs in India. They already stopped their operation and are no more available for cable production.
The Indian fiber optic cable market is growing and will have more suppliers shortly. Since Corning has established their fiber drawing factory in Pune, there will not be much problem with fiber supply to meet the demands of these cable makers. Sterlite is already a strong fiber supplier to domestic cable makers.
Good luck to Indian friends!
